SALT LAKE CITY — An Eagle Mountain woman was arrested last week after her 2-month-old drowned in her bathtub.

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office said in an affidavit that it received the call at 2:15 p.m. on Friday, March 7.

Upon the officer’s arrival, they found that the 2-month-old had been in the tub with her mother, Taylor Nichole Trusty.

Trusty explained she had prepared a bath at around 9:30 to 10 the night before. She said she regularly takes baths that last three to four hours and often falls asleep during them.

Trusty explained to the officers that she had placed her 2-month-old daughter in a bouncy chair next to the tub. She said the baby stayed there until she began to fuss. She then picked up her daughter and placed her on her lap just above the water line. Trusty said she must have fallen asleep after this, as she couldn’t remember much of what followed.

Trusty said she was later woken up by her 7-year-old daughter, who was concerned the 2-month-old was face down in the tub. Trusty then got out of the bath, wrapped the 2-month-old in a towel and began patting her back. At this point, she said the baby was no longer breathing.

The 7-year-old went to her grandmother, who was in the home, for help and told her to call the police.

Trusty told officers she had been drinking at the time she was in the bath with her daughter. She said she had several shots of a hard liquor and had begun drinking two seltzers. She was unsure of the exact amount she had to drink.

Officers arrested Trusty on one charge for negligent homicide and another for damaging a jail or place of confinement. At this time, she is being held without bail.
